Training methods and practices have continued to evolve rapidly over the last decade, especially since the introduction of power meters and other sensors in a variety of sports. In sports such as cycling, XC skiing and running we have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of data you can collect from a single training session including both subjective and objective data. This is where the importance of Today’s plan is really highlighted, as this provides the central hub for all of your training, racing and off bike monitoring. All of your training data can be synced to Today’s Plan, and properly ingested before being displayed in an actionable manner.

Whether you are looking to progress to a Team Sky contract, complete an Ironman or simply get back into shape it is important that you acknowledge the basic steps and focus on achieving these. You can always dig a little deeper into the analytics, but first make sure you have your basic set up established.
Activity: The breakdown of your training
Each session you have scheduled will have a purpose, whether it be a hard intervals session or simply a recovery activity. There will normally be some common analytics that you look at it in most sessions, which can be as simple as did I complete all of the scheduled intervals in the set range?
Calendar: Your training hub
From your calendar you can quickly get a very good summary of your activities, training plan and any off bike data. You can ensure you are only seeing the points of interest to you. A good general rule: if you are not looking at a value on a daily basis, should it be displayed on your screen? Probably not. For example if you are not concerned about total ascent and descent in your activities then remove that from your calendar view.
Dashboard: The overview of your training/racing
Again the same theme continues with the dashboards, identify the key steps to achieving your goal and make sure you are tracking your progress to achieving each of these steps. A good start is identifying your performance, your training load and if you have consistently been completing what is scheduled.
The options are endless when it comes to analysing your data but it is important that you start with a solid, simple foundation. From there you can delve into further detail but a good foundation will ensure you always refer back to this to ultimately determine if you are on track to achieving your goal.
Often the best answer is what is obvious.
